Hannah Jane
Maybury
Hello, I’m Hannah Jane Maybury, a Melbourne based designer. My journey into design was somewhat unplanned, as a self-taught dressmaker studying film and television where no one else had sewing skills. This led me into costume designing for various directors alongside producing and directing my own documentaries. I have had the privilege of collaborating with visionary creators, breathing life into their designs. However, my career took an unexpected turn following my first degree as I braved a challenging work drought. It was amidst the chaos of the pandemic that I decided to return to study, aiming to rekindle and deepen my knowledge of fashion and design. Because if anything is worth doing, it’s worth doing it the hard way too. Driven by a desire to be able to bring any idea to life, my time at LCI Melbourne was a turning point. It resulted in my second degree, a bachelor in Design Arts: Fashion and Costume, complimenting my first bachelor in Fine Arts, majoring in Film and Television which were both awarded with High Distinctions. My life is fuelled by an unwavering commitment to learning and improving my skills. While my obsessive perfectionism can be demanding, it compels me to persistently refine my craft. In my career I aim to spark conversations and shed light on social issues, utilizing mediums of film and fashion in unconventional ways. This past year has been a whirlwind, interning with Anna Cordell, participating in PayPal Fashion Week's Restyled Challenge, making multiple wedding dresses for clients, India Fashion Week Australia and being invited to design for Vaults Upcoming Melbourne Fashion Week runway. All of this while also searching for a place to live and build a studio in a rental and cost-of-living crisis. I am humbled by the excitement and acceptance that has been shown to me and I deeply appreciate every door that has been opened for me. Looking ahead, I am excited about what the future holds, eager to keep pushing the boundaries of design and storytelling, and open to connecting with others who share that same passion for the transformative potential of film and fashion.
